With Valentine's Day right around the corner and the imminent release of 50 Shades of Grey,
the most highly-anticipated erotic flick since who knows when, what
better time could there be to explore the kinky side of sex? But it
seems some U.S. cities are getting their BDSM on more than others,
according to a survey done by a new fetish site appropriately called Kink University.
To celebrate their launch, Kink University—a site aiming to make resources for BDSM and other kinky sex interests more accessible—decided to rank American states by (surprise!) kinkiness. They measured each state's total kink population using the social network Fetlife, calculated the number of kink-aware professionals (like therapists, doctors, lawyers) listed in the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom's online directory, and added up the porn purchases of their inhabitants using data from Kink.com.
So which city landed the top spot? That would be Portland, OR, with four percent of the population belonging to kinky social networking sites. Surprised? We're not (we've got nothing but love for Portland, but have you seen Portlandia? Those Oregonians are up to some weird stuff!). Check out which other cities made the top ten:
2. San Francisco, CA
3. New York, NY
4. Chicago, IL,
5. Washington D.C.
6. Los Angeles, CA
7. Seattle, WA
8. Boston, MA
9. Philadelphia
10. Las Vegas
Other surprising stats? People in Washington D.C. are most likely to be the first to buy a Kink.com membership, 7 percent of kink members identify themselves as female, and El Paso has the smallest kink population than any other city (oh, Texas).
But before you get too worried about where you fit in in this kinky State of the Union, know this: you don't need to be a full-on dominatrix to heat things up in the bedroom. There are ways to gradually add some kink to your sex life. Check out Kink University's video tutorials on basic BDSM skills (ie. bondage tape, domination), or add one of these 7 Kinky Upgrades to Your Sex Life. Now, go ahead and indulge in your deepest 50 Shades fantasies.
