China has issued a ban on Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system,
prohibiting it on government computers. A Chinese news agency reported
that the ban by the Central Government Procurement Center was put in
place to protect security after Microsoft ended support for its Windows
XP operating system. It targets new purchases, stipulating that desktop,
laptop and tablet computers bought by the government must use a
different operating system. Microsoft said was surprised by the decision
and is working with the Chinese government to ensure its products and
services meet all government procurement requirements.
